What is an interested party on a renters insurance policy?
An "interested party" can refer to a person or a business, such as a landlord or property management company. Your renters insurance company will notify an interested party of changes to your policy. These changes might include whether you have a renters policy, if it gets canceled or non-renewed, or if changes are made to your coverages and/or limits.

How does adding an interested party affect a renters insurance policy?
Listing a landlord or property management company as an interested party serves as proof of your renters insurance and can alert your landlord or rental company of changes made to your policy that could affect your rental agreement.
Listing an interested party on your renters policy shouldn't affect the cost of your renters insurance. Adding an interested party is for informational purposes only.
How to add an interested party to your renters insurance policy
Contact your insurer to provide the interested party's:
- Full name or company name
- Address
- Contact information
You may be able to complete this online or via email instead of calling. After the interested party has been added, you can request an updated insurance declarations page for your records.
Why does a landlord or rental company need to know if you have a renters insurance policy?
Depending on your lease, your landlord or rental company may require you to get renters insurance for liability purposes. Adding your landlord or rental company as an interested party to your renters policy shows them proof of your coverage.
Once a landlord or rental company is added as an interested party, can they be removed?
Yes, but your rental agreement may require you to keep your landlord or rental company listed on your policy for the duration of the policy.
If you move to a new residence and continue to rent, remove the previous landlord or rental company as an interested party and add the new landlord or rental company (if they require it).
Some insurance companies allow you to make the change on their website while others may require you to send a form with the change request. If you're not sure, contact your insurer to determine how to remove an interested party from your policy.
What's the difference between an additional interest and an additional insured?
An additional interest on a renters insurance policy is a company or person that's notified when a change to the policy has been made or if it cancels or lapses; interested parties listed on the policy aren't covered by the policy in any way.
An additional insured is a person that you add to your renters policy so they can be covered. This could be a roommate or family member that lives with you.
To cover an additional insured's items like their clothing, electronics, and furniture, make sure the entire value of their personal property is accounted for under your renters personal property coverage.
Example:If your personal belongings are worth $35,000 and your roommate has an additional $30,000 in personal items, then you should consider at least a $65,000 limit for personal property coverage.
